Peter Goldsbury   BE (Elect) - Auckland, Diploma in Management Studies -Portsmouth, Grad Dip in Teacher Education - AUT, Project Management Professional (PMP)

Peter shares knowledge that he has accumulated on a very diverse career path that has seen him involved in a projects of many types from almost every direction.

  • He started as a young Electrical Engineer, working for Plessey in both New Zealand and the UK on leading-edge development, manufacturing and software projects.  Plessey was an early adopter of Project Management.
  • There he went on to lead some of New Zealand’s largest high technology projects for local and export customers.  As Engineering Manager and then Divisional Manager he helped grow a large engineering, software and manufacturing  team.  That experience provided lessons and processes for  “Managing by Projects” using a strong matrix structure.
  • In 1987 he started his own company Strategic Expertise Ltd and undertook long term contracts in large organisations including:  (1) Auckland Electric Power Board where he led the technical evaluation, tendering and implementation process for multimillion dollar projects to upgrade all its telecommunication facilities  (2) At Telecom he took on the role as Data Integrity Coordinator leading a cross functional improvement program that spanned the whole organisation and used local resources for its projects.  That provided lessons in program leadership – making radical things happen by inspiring people to participate without having direct control over them.
  • In partnership with The Auckland University of Technology (AUT), Strategic Expertise developed and delivered workshops: "Leading Collaborative Projects and Innovation in your Organisation" www.projectmanagement.co.nz  This involved international management team training, undergraduate modules, public short courses, in-house programmes, facilitation and mentoring.  These have given Peter the privilege of playing a part in the growth of many of New Zealand’s most Innovative Organisations and their people.
  • Peter is devoted to the concept of "Team Learning" and in 1997 completed the Graduate Diploma in Teacher Education at AUT. Participants on his workshops are expected to work together sharing their knowledge and experience with others, thus stretching the boundaries of conventional wisdom.  These are the practices necessary to grow  “Learning Organisations” that can prosper fully in the knowledge economy.
  • Peter is an active member of the Project Management Institute and was a volunteer on the PMI OPM3 Organisational Project Management Capability Maturity Model development team.  Despite this and being a certified PMP, Peter was frustrated that the project management bodies of knowledge and practices that had their origins in large engineering industries overseas, were often inappropriate in scale for the New Zealand situation, did not match our more collaborative Kiwi team leadership culture, nor did they easily fit into non-technical project situations. This dilemma was resolved when with an AUT team he discovered a small rural school that had pioneered some very different organisational learning growth orientated processes and behaviours.  These have now been distilled as the Tipu Ake Organic Leadership Model www.tipuake.org.nz   Peter has been privileged to help them share this  model extensively at conferences and workshops in New Zealand and internationally. In 2005 he ran workshops “Tools for Growing Living Organisations” in London, Helsinki, Wales and San Francisco. This model has allowed Peter to participate and share in a network that includes many of the world’s leading-edge organisational development thinkers.
  • In a voluntary capacity he works with a network of rural communities, youth, universities and others who are adopting a proactive approach toward growing leadership for a sustainable world.  These programs, which also involve a wide range of government, educational and commercial agencies, are pioneering some very different very different forms of organisational collaboration.   These take Peter into the network of voluntary and community service sectors, as well as into the systems of government via the workshops he runs in Wellington more for public service employees involved in both policy and operation areas.
  • Peter’s current focus is now on facilitating “Living System Thinking”  supported by workshops that help organisations in all sectors raise their project and business performance to new levels.  These help incubate the organic leadership needed to grow team capability, networks and alliances that drive radical programs and success in the knowledge economy.
